49er carnage…
Tristano
& I sailed yesterday on the 49er in the lightest wind so far.
It was averaging 15, gusting to 20…
Anyway, we were getting along fine, until the mainsheet broke. No
problem though… we fixed that and kept going. Then the tackline
for the spinnaker broke… then one of the jib pins in the track
disappeared… then we lost all the stuff from the gear bag on
board… then the jib battens went… it just kept getting
worse!
In the end we capsized about 6 times, and had to resort to chasing
windsurfers backwards and forwards across the lake for fun. Pretty
interesting chasing them down with the spinnaker pole extended a
good two metres in front of the boat, then racing into a two-sail
gybe to do it all over again.
Plenty of fun in the end… though thankfully I don’t have to pay
the repair bills!
So now I’m plotting and scheming to see how I can get myself into a
fast 49er for when I return home… hmmm…
