New 18 site

Saturday, October 30th, 2004

Jack has finally got around to finishing the new Australian 18 footer web site. There’s a bunch of
new photos (of which I’ve added just a few of us). There’s also a
nice on there of John taking a swim :)

The forecast looks good for tomorrow’s first Club Championship
race… 15/20 knots!

Ahhh the memories

Looking through the old blog posts brings it
all back… It looks as though I was blogging before blogging
became oh so mundane… with my first blog
post way back in January 2002! And that’s not to mention all
the blogging Tai did back in 2000!

On the rocks

If the boats performance in the America’s
Cup back in 1992 wasn’t bad enough, Spirit - the AC boat put
out to pasture/charter has hit the Sydney Opera House.

The corporate yachties from the Financial Times somehow
managed to run into the biggest obstacle on the harbour. Now that’s
talent!

I wonder if that’s a sign for the success of their startup
paper?

Looks like an otherwise nice day on the harbour though.

If only

If only I didn’t have a job… I could’ve taken up the offer to
sail Atomic on Wednesday.

Or maybe I should just change my working hours :)

Finally settling down… not quite.

It’s been a long long time since I’ve had a place to live that I
could kinda call my own. But now I do.

I’ve decided to get into a share place on the lower North shore,
and will have to battle with the 4wd mums of
Mosman from now on. Not a bad little place really… plenty of
character as they would say. The new IKEA-junkie flatmate is nice enough.
Talkative, serial TV watching & gym-going, works at night,
sometimes wears a uniform and uses handcuffs!

The last few weeks have been a bit of a rush, I’m finding everything seems like a blur. Work has been
trundling along nicely despite being only a week from deadline and
without a clear idea of the requirements. Its fun to be back.

The tank is getting me around - but only just. For the last week
I’ve had to tote a large bottle of water with me, and refill it
before each journey to avoid overheating. I guess you can’t expect
much from a car that’s done close to half a million k’s, and where
the odometer and fuel guage no longer work. I guess I can add that
to the list of things to buy…

I’d better be off to watch Burke’s Backyard (with a
Prodigy backtrack - wtf?) and get some more home renovation ideas.
Oh my god!

Oh yeah… she’s a policewoman.

The latest

My apologies, the blog has been a bit sparse lately - but that’s
not to say that nothing has been happening!

Let’s go backwards…

I’m now in Sydney, about to start a new contract. Only a short one
at the moment, but already interviewing for the job after this one.
Even though I’m technically yet to start an “official” job - I’ve
been so busy with so many other projects that I’ve been spending
almost every waking hour in front of the computer…. ahh the
memories.

And then there was the 18 racing on the
harbour on Sunday. In a 15-18knot Nor-Easter, Sweeney, Pete &
Myself started on 6 and kept the lead around the course to win. Of
course it was a handicap start - so we weren’t technically the
fastest. There were only 7 finishers from 14 starters, with most of
the new boats being forced to retire due to gear failure. Anyway,
it was a great day for top-of-big-rig range, and despite some
dodgey gybes near the end, we didn’t have too many issues. My
spinnaker halyard even held up! I’d made a 2.5/5mm tapered halyard
- after spending buckets of money on a 3.5mm core that didn’t fit -
and even with the kite flogging to clear Shark Island, the halyard
held up. Thank god for
that.

So anyway, with the 18 club situated in the seat of Wentworth,
there was plenty of talk of the election result. Interesting to see
who all the eastern suburbs boys voted for - but no suprises really
when Malcolm
Turnbull was mentioned. It seems that I’ve never voted for a
winner in any on the elections I’ve been eligible for! I voted
Green, since a vote for
Labor in Newcastle is a bit of
a waste. Maybe I should’ve voted for Family First to help them with
their lesbian burning campaign. But none of it mattered for shit
anyway, with the vast majority of people supporting the coalition
for some reason I’m yet to work out. Oh well, another 3 years of
the same, and with Honest John
controlling the senate anything goes. Telstra will go for $30B or
so, we’ll end up with some ridiculous Internet filtering if
Assemblies of God/Family First has anything to do with it, we’ll
give some more money to private schools, pay some more money for
degrees, cut down some more trees, start a few more wars, get even
further up the arse of the Americans, pay less tax (if you earn
more than $50k or so), get sacked easier, buy our newspapers,
television and radio from gool ole Aussie Rupert, drink ethanol, shoot
boatpeople, forget about Aborigines, and the list goes on. Oh the
future is bright.

I think I might go into business.

So going back even further…

I put out a few resumes for a few jobs a week or so back, and
within days was fielding calls from recruiters around the place. I
got the job with the first interview I had even though I thought
the interview didn’t go well. So that’s good I guess. Unfortunately
now I probably have to go back to using fucking Windows.

Speaking of computers… I’ve managed to help out Apple’s shareprice by buying into a new iPod, and a nice little Airport
wireless network. Perhaps my lack of a job has allowed me too
much time for shopping online…

So what else…

The 49er scene looks to be picking up steam
locally.
Outteridge & Menzies have bought an old shitter to train on,
Dave has bought a cheaper one still. Beeby is keen to buy one. Tom
& Sam have upgraded. Joe & Charles have a new one on the
way apparently. It will be awesome to get a whole bunch of young
and competitive-ish people racing the boats. I might just have to
buy one too…

maybe after I get that next job.
