Training for Beijing

Wednesday, April 27th, 2005

Well the conditions in Coffs over the weekend were close to those
expected for Qingdao in 2008… but that’s about it.

There were a bunch of kids skiffs there for the annual Screaming
Kites regatta - yes another of Dad’s names from years ago.

Since the wind isn’t the attraction - the number of visitors could
probably be attributed to the disproportionate number of teenage
girls who sail from Coffs… oh well. Though it was a bit strange
going to a regatta up there where the Kerr or Christian girls
weren’t racing…

I’m not sure that I’ll be able to take the Moth to this event next
year - it doesn’t have a spinnaker, and the launching through the
surf would be painful, and who knows what’ll be happening next
year. Hmmm…

Anyway, we won after Jamie & Iain were OCS’d in one of the
starts. They sailed much better than usual in the light airs - and
the way they’re going they’ve got what it takes for a top 5 in the
Worlds - if they keep their heads together.

The 13 footers were a bit disappointing, not beating the 29ers this
year. The fast boat Fluid was not there - so that might have
something to do with it.

Anyone want to organise a regatta?

Tuesday, April 19th, 2005

I’ve got this great idea for an event… I just have no idea
if/how/when/why to get it off the ground.

I couldn’t help but think of Mothing as I was running around the
harbour front this afternoon… wouldn’t it be an awesome regatta
to have in front of the opera house and botanic gardens, right in
the bay between the opera house and mrs macquarie’s chair, at lunch
time, in summer, with a fleet of 6+ foiling moths! Big screen, on
board cameras, commentator. 3 races during lunch time for a
week.

The number of corporate types who are there every day is pretty
awesome… the exposure would be huge.

Not sure what it would be for, but it would be good entertainment
and good exposure - would it ever happen? Probably not without a
lot of organising effort…. Oh well.

Any suggestions?

Maybe we should substitute that for the Moth involvement in SIRS
this December?

Update #1: Rohan is keen. We’re looking at a series of 3 events
including this one, one in January in Melbourne’s Docklands when
the VO70s are in town, and another at Skandia Geelong week. Looking
for diy footage from headcams etc, composed after racing and
released over the web instead of through the conventional media.
Low budget, low overheads, unconventional - that’s Moths for
you!

Update #2: Check out www.foiler1.com for more information
on the upcoming series…

Geek addiction

Acceptance is the first step to recovery they say, so here I
go…

I’m addicted to Flickr.

What can I say. It’s a great idea that’s been implemented
well.

I’ve currently got about a gig of photos up there already - and
another few thousand waiting to go. When I work out how to plug the
RSS feed of my latest flickr additions into this blog, then it’ll
be all sweet. Yes I blogged about it a few days ago… but its just
that good.

Broken Blog

Monday, April 4th, 2005

The machine that runs the blog broke down… and was
repaired…

I didn’t lose any content of course… my disjointed ramblings from
the past year are still available.

And so here comes another years worth

Photos photos and more photos

Monday, April 4th, 2005

Since I have gigs and gigs of photos in my collection… and have
always been worried about losing my laptop, or my backups… i’ve
decided to add them to the web.

So if you have a spare few minutes… or hours… or whatever…
go to have a look at my photos on Flickr.
Not many there at the moment… but more on the way.

Weddings, honeymoons etc

Monday, April 4th, 2005

Last weekend saw me being a groomsmen at Mark & Sarah’s Wedding.
A nice little get ceremony somewhere (sure the town was small), and
a great reception in the Hunter Valley.

All very nice - and no stress… I didn’t have to make any
speeches, or doing anything even remotely important :)

All in all it was very well organised, almost to the point of being
anal. But it worked - so can’t complain.

You’ve gotta love Jono’s line - “Weddings are a great institution.
Who wants to live in an institution!”… sounds too good to be
original though!
