I shouldn’t have been keeping track of it… but I did.
The Moth campaign from Feb-Aug this year cost $27551.09, which doesn’t include sponsorship valued at approx $11322.18.
Ouch. And that’s before the return shipping is paid.
Then I’ve started the planning to compete in 5 World Championships in the next 12 months. That’s not going to be particularly cheap either!

Oh I just shed a tear for you Mr IT

You need to get yourself a mortgage, wife and kid so that you too can skip World Championships and sail an 8 year old boat.
Maybe I should speak to your sponsors. That amount of money would fund my sailing for years! Gotta be better value for them

Hmmm… let me think about that for a minute…
I agree though, sponsor value is hard to measure. But then I haven’t seen many comments on your blog lately

But I can gaurantee A4 sized coverage on the pinboard inside the sailing club!
Now that is value!

Surely, to get the true cost, you need to subtract the current open market value of the boat. You should get $20k, so the real cost in $7500. Taking into account the sponsorship, I make that a profit, even if you assume funding costs! Nice work if you can get it!

Woops! Just realised that the sponsorship was on top. Even so, $7500 is less than a third of an 18’s annual budget………………

Less than a third of your 18’s annual budget perhaps Simon.

Let’s guess the Rag’s budget - new boat $37500. New sails this year? I bet there will be a few of those. And then there is the clothing allowance. With all the flash Rag shore kit, that must add another few thousand!
