Slow news month

Monday, March 30th, 2009

It’s been a quiet month.

With the JJ out of the way, the 18s have been winding down towards the end of the season. Thankfully all the handicap races are out of the way, and only 1 weekend is left before things wrap up til next October.

The Moth has gone off to it’s new owner Phil, who is charging around Rose Bay every weekend, getting faster and faster every time he ventures out.

That leaves me with not much to report on really… other than the corporate games last week. My MacBank team took the title over our arch-nemisis from last year, PB. We took it to them right up to the end, scoring a vital penalty in the final bottom mark rounding to take the series.

And my boat is due to leave the factory tomorrow. I hope I will get some time sailing it before Easter.

Talking of slow news, I’ve even ventured out on a 29er for the first time in close to 3 years. My god they are small and slow boats. I keep waiting for the bow to lift out and the thing to accelerate. But no, the laws of physics are not easily broken.

Moth-less… again

So I’m without a Moth again… for the 5th time.

My boat sold to a local young sailor Phil Kurts, who already looks pretty confortable blasting around the harbour. With a bit of time in the boat he should be on the pace.

The last couple of times I’ve sold my boats, I’ve been without a replacement for a good 6 months or more. It looks like this time should be different, with the new one scheduled to arrive by the end of the month. Fingers crossed.

So much for the two-boat comparison program though.

Big wins for big races

Or not so much…

The Rag got up for a win yesterday, but it was only a handicap race and half the fleet was mixed up with different teams and different boats. And thankfully the course was set so the scratch top mark was near enough to the rest to keep things close.

Oh well.

We finally got to stretch out a little with a nice 15 knot South Easterly blowing for the first part of the race. It hasn’t been remotely windy for a while now, so the little extra breeze we had was very welcome.

Pete’s suggestion of a chamomile tea in the morning for John and myself seemed to do the trick, with a little less anger on board compared to the last few somewhat tense weeks. Always good to be nice and relaxed.

Only a few weeks left in the season now.

Showing us how it’s done

Word has it that the 7 guys will be stepping off their boat this weekend to sail in the Audi regatta.

And who would they hand their boat to other than our friendly Olympian, 49er World Champion and Moth National Champion Nathan Outteridge.

So Nathan will no doubt make us all look pretty ordinary, just like he did in Geelong.

That’s unless we can find a couple of willing, but incapable crew members to slow him down.

I don’t like our chances.
