Jumping the shark

Literally…

I’ve never actually seen a shark in all the years I’ve been sailing, and I still haven’t.

But I hit something very large yesterday. Flying along upwind the rudder connected and the boat did the instant pitchpole. There was a massive crack as it went down. I swam around to check the foils were all still connected and the gantry was there. No visible damage. The foils were fine, with not even a scratch yet there was nothing I could see in the water that I’d hit.

Very strange.

So it was either a dead body or a shark. Or a dead shark. Or something equally dramatic.

A submerged palm frond did that to me one time – never saw it before impact. I thought it was a sea lion at first; swam very quickly back to the boat!

Ok it was me. I got a little to close! Not enough weight on my belt!

I still reckon it was an endangered species of some kind.
