Land of the free and home of the brave

Well we (Rohan, Amac, Robbo, Chris and myself) arrived yesterday and spent today sorting out our boats.

Unfortunately we couldn’t launch from the regatta site, but we knew that wasn’t allowed before we arrived. We did make a vain attempt, but the PRO for the weekend regatta was adamant that we couldn’t unpack, let alone sail from the beach.

Anyway, we found a good spot to unpack and assemble under the trees at the far end of the park. The launching was not so flash.

Upwind off the ramp which was only marginally wide enough, into the strong tide and around the corner into the gusty breeze.

Not quite ideal.

Rohan was first prepared and got out into the main river with no problems.

Chris tried next about an hour later, by which time the breeze appeared to have built. He managed to hit the bricks once before snapping a shroud in the main channel and triggering the rescue air-raid sirens.

I was rigged and in my gear, but after pulling Chris and the remaining various pieces out of the water, I piked. Rohan sailed around by himself before returning to the beach.

Oh well. Day -9 to the Worlds. And out come the last minute Dyform shrouds.

Jesus! Why can’t you guys launch at the regatta site of off the beach? I checked out that ramp today and it’s ugly. I can’t even imagine taking a moth off that dock into flushing current and eddies and a stiff swirling headwind.
